| Morocco lived dark moments in the history of human rights under the yoke of the old régime. The new régime promised many reforms to the Moroccan people, in the field of freedom of expression, among others. Yet these reforms never saw the day and the Moroccan situation with regards to human rights fell short of the expectations of all Moroccans. |
| Since early May 2006, Moroccan authorities lead a campaign of oppression against the Justice and Spirituality Movement, known for its anti-violence principles. Houses and premises are being besieged and subject to police raids; the official web sites, www.aljamaa.com, and www.mouminate.net , of the Movement obstructed with no founded raison, all the Movement’s activities banned, hundreds of its members arrested, men and women, young and old. |
| According to the Movement’s reports, these arrests and police raids led by the Moroccan authorities were so violent that they caused serious injuries among the Movement’s members. The police forces have also robbed the Movement’s belongings and logistic material and destroyed its premises and members’ houses. |
| Worth-mentioning is the fact that the Justice and Spirituality Movement is the biggest and most popular Islamic organization in Morocco. Although it obtained the legal recognition, the Movement has been, since its foundation, victim to extreme provocation and oppression by the Moroccan authorities, which deprive it of one of its basic rights: to communicate with the Moroccan people. |
| Keeping a close watch on the tragic events taking place in Morocco, the Canadian Observatory of Human Rights exhorts the public opinion to denounce the blatant violations of Human rights and the oppressive acts against the Justice and Spirituality Movement. |
| We hereby denounce the human rights violations committed by the Moroccan authorities and express our solemn support to the Justice and Spirituality Movement, known for its peaceful action. We also call upon all human right organizations to denounce these violations and take swift action to end these repressive acts of the Moroccan authorities. |
