The arrested members of the Justice and Spirituality Movement released late at night
Editorial Stuff, Thursday 25 May, 2006
All the members of the Justice and Spirituality Movement, men and women, were released in the first hours of the dawn of Thursday May 25, 2006 after the authorities had interrogated them and made identity checks. The authorities still seize a number of equipments, books and posters that were prepared for the open house events.
On Wednesday May 24, 2006 around 145 members of the JSM (among whom 25 women) were arrested in one of the open house events that the JSM was organizing in some of the cities. Despite the legal status of the JSM and the legal nature of its activities, status and nature confirmed by the Moroccan courts, the Makhzen authorities committed serious violations against the JSM’s members as well as against the Moroccan citizens who decided to surmount the siege laid to the JSM and attend those open house events to know about the movement more closely.
In Temara, early in the morning, the authorities hysterically broke into the house of a JSM’s member, instilled terror into the neighbors and arrested 50 members, destroyed equipments and seized books and posters prepared for the open house event.
In Rabat, the premises where the open house event was to be organized were cordoned off by the authorities who imposed a curfew on the citizens and forced the storekeepers to close their stores. After hours during which the authorities, irrespective of their stripes, cordoned off the premises and terrorized the neighboring citizens, the Makhzen agents broke into the house, arrested 75 members, among whom were 25 women.
In the same manner, that is, through cordoning off houses and casting terror into citizens, the Makhzen authorities banned the open house events that were to be organized in the cities of Sidi Slimane, Suq Larba, Kenitra, and Tangier, where 20 members had been arrested.
